UNC Health Care CEO, medical school dean to depart in 2019

William L. Roper, MD, CEO of Chapel Hill, N.C.-based UNC Health Care and dean of the UNC School of Medicine, will retire May 15, 2019.

Dr. Roper assumed his current roles in 2004. He is also University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's vice chancellor for medical affairs. During his tenure, the healthcare organization has grown to nearly $5 billion in annual revenue and 30,000-plus employees.

Dr. Roper also oversaw the growth in UNC School of Medicine's total research funding, which has increased by 50-plus percent since he became dean to $441 million in 2017. The medical school trains 2,400-plus healthcare providers and medical students annually.

Dr. Roper has worked at UNC-Chapel Hill since 1997, when he joined as dean of the public health school.

"It has been a high honor to serve with so many talented and committed people. I know our team is well equipped to continue taking on the challenges of a rapidly evolving medical and health care landscape," Dr. Roper said in a statement.
