U of Maryland Medical System CMO resigns after 28 years

Alyssa Rege -

The CMO of the University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore resigned last week after a nearly three-decade tenure at the institution, The Baltimore Sun reports.

Stephen Bartlett, MD, served as executive vice president of the UMMS and as a tenured endowed professor and director of the system's transplant program. He was appointed CMO of the system in May.

The Maryland salary database indicated Dr. Bartlett was one of the highest-paid employees in the state, with a salary of $951,000 in 2017, according to The Baltimore Sun.

A UMMS spokesperson did not tell The Baltimore Sun whether Dr. Bartlett was retiring or taking another position elsewhere, stating "there is no additional information" they could provide.

Michelle Gourdine, MD, currently senior vice president for population health and primary care at UMMS, will serve as interim CMO. Health system officials will also hold a national search to find a replacement director of transplantation.
