Kelly Gooch -

Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health has made three executive leadership changes, including promoting the CFO to COO.

The 92-hospital system promoted Ben Carter, executive vice president and CFO, to COO, effective Jan. 1.

In his new role, Mr. Carter will lead all health ministries and other operational areas at Trinity Health, according to the health system. Trinity Health regional CEOs — along with executive vice presidents for continuing care and administrative services, the chief information/innovation officer and the chief experience officer — will report to him.

Mr. Carter, a certified public accountant, joined Trinity Health in 2010. During his tenure, he has had additional operational leadership roles and served as interim leader of East Group operations.

Mr. Carter previously was COO of the Detroit Medical Center, where he played a key role in its turnaround and six consecutive years of profitability.

He also held executive-level positions for nearly 17 years at Oakwood Healthcare in Dearborn, Mich.

Trinity Health also selected Julie Spencer Washington to serve as senior vice president and chief marketing and communications Officer, effective Jan. 13.

Ms. Washington most recently served as chief marketing officer for Champion Petfoods, an independent pet food maker, where she is credited with launching the company's first award-winning brand campaigns.

She also has served as chief marketing and innovation officer for Jamba Juice and a marketing leader at Procter & Gamble, Luxottica Retail and Nestle Purina.

Rob Casalou, president and CEO of the Trinity Health's Michigan region, will see his role change to include leadership of regional health ministries in Athens, Ga., and Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Mr. Casalou previously served as president and CEO of Trinity's St. Joseph Mercy hospitals and was president and CEO of Ypsilanti, Mich.-based St. Joseph Mercy Health System in 2015.
