Trinity Health CEO leaving in June; successor named

Richard Gilfillan, MD, CEO of Livonia, Mich.-based Trinity Health, will depart from the system in June.

Dr. Gilfillan, who has been commuting from Washington, D.C., is leaving so he can be at home more with his family, according to Trinity Health.

"For the people we serve, Rick's bold and innovative leadership has transformed Trinity Health from a system focused primarily on acute care to an accountable, people-centered health system that provides outstanding episodic care, population health management and community health and well-being services to address the social determinants of health. The board unanimously shares heartfelt appreciation for all Rick has accomplished in helping us build the healthcare system of the future," said Trinity Health Board Chair James Bentley, PhD.

Dr. Gilfillan has helmed Trinity Health since November 2013, months after Trinity Health and Newtown Square, Pa.-based Catholic Health East completed their merger. During his tenure, the system has grown from 82 hospitals and 89 continuing care locations in 21 states in fiscal year 2013 to 94 hospitals and 109 continuing care locations in 22 states in fiscal year 2018.

Trinity Health said the system also has reduced hospital-acquired conditions and readmissions and improved sepsis mortality under Dr. Gilfillan's leadership.

Trinity Health President and COO Michael Slubowski will succeed Dr. Gilfillan as CEO on July 1.

Mr. Slubowski has served as system president and COO since May 2017. Before joining Trinity Health, he was president and CEO of Broomfield, Colo.-based SCL Health.
