Top physician to leave Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC: 5 things to know

David H. Perlmutter, MD, the top physician at Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, will leave the hospital to become dean at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, UPMC announced Monday, according to a Trib Live report.

Here are five things to know about the move.

1. Dr. Perlmutter will relocate by December. 

2. At the Missouri school, Dr. Perlmutter will double as executive vice chancellor for medical affairs, replacing Larry J. Shapiro, MD, who is stepping down after nearly 12 years in the position.

3. "There's a great opportunity in this job to be part of the major advances in clinical medicine and biomedical research in the next 10 or 15 years," Dr. Perlmutter said in the report.

4. Dr. Perlmutter has a history with Washington University. He worked as a faculty member there for 15 years before 2001 when he moved to Children's, where he is physician-in-chief and scientific director.

5. Dr. Perlmutter's wife, Barbara A. Cohlan, MD, a Pitt professor, will join the Washington University faculty as a professor of pediatrics in the division of newborn medicine.
