Bruce Auerbach, MD, CEO of Attleboro, Mass.-based Sturdy Memorial Hospital, retired June 19, earlier than planned, according to an emailed statement from the organization.

Dr. Auerbach began his retirement early due to "personal issues and health matters of family members," Kathi Hague, manager of public and community relations at Sturdy Memorial, wrote in the email to Becker's Hospital Review.

Joseph Casey, CFO and treasurer at the hospital, will serve as interim president and CEO, effective immediately.

Dr. Auerbach became president and CEO of the hospital in 2014, prior to which, he has served as vice president, CMO and medical director. During his tenure, the hospital earned a surplus of $7.7 million in 2016 and $2.8 million in 2017, according to The Sun Chronicle.

"As a longstanding member of the senior management team, we are confident that [Mr. Casey] will continue to lead our organization with the same steadfast commitment and loyalty to the communities we serve as he has for the past two decades," said Robert Thresher, chairman of Sturdy's board of managers. "It has been my pleasure working alongside Dr. Auerbach while serving as chairman of the board for the past two years. I am confident that Sturdy's legacy will continue as we search for our next leader."
