St. Luke's Baptist CEO to retire, kicking off leadership changes within Baptist Health System

San Antonio-based Baptist Health System will make three CEO changes at its hospitals.

John Knox, CEO of St. Luke's Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, plans to retire at the end of the year. During his tenure, the hospital became San Antonio's first comprehensive stroke center and established the South Texas Lung Institute. Mr. Knox also oversaw the expansion of the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit and obstetrical program.

Eric Schmacker, PhD, will succeed Mr. Knox, effective immediately. He most recently served as CEO of Mission Trail Baptist Hospital in San Antonio, a role he assumed in August 2016. He also has previous experience as COO of North Central Baptist Hospital in San Antonio as well as 21 years in hospitals in the U.S. Army's medical department.

Gina Temple, PhD, will take over as CEO of Mission Trail Baptist Hospital. She has served as Texas Group COO since July and COO for North Central Baptist Hospital since October 2016. He was previously vice president of operational integration for Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health. She has served as an examiner for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.
