St. Joseph Medical Center CEO resigns

Kelly Gooch -

Mark Bernard, CEO of St. Joseph Medical Center in Houston, will leave his position to take a job at another organization, according to a Houston Chronicle report.

Mr. Bernard's resignation takes effect Aug. 15. St. Joseph described the reason for his departure as personal and said he has accepted the CEO role at Resolute Health Care in New Braunfels, Texas, according to the report.

Mr. Bernard has served as CEO of St. Joseph for the last two years. During his tenure, the medical center has experienced troubles. CMS announced last November it planned to cut the hospital's Medicare and Medicaid funding. The funding cut announcement followed a federal inquiry into an incident at the medical center last August that involved an off-duty police officer who was working security at St. Joseph and shot a patient.

In the end, St. Joseph was able to reach an agreement that allowed the medical center to continue to receive federal funding as it worked out compliance issues, according to the report.

St. Joseph declined to comment to the Houston Chronicle on whether the controversy and Mr. Bernard's departure were connected in any way.

Bryanie Swilley, eastern division president of St. Joseph's parent company, Franklin, Tenn.-based Iasis Healthcare, has been tapped as interim CEO.
