President and CEO of Lebanon, N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health James Weinstein, DO, will retire at the end of his term in June 2017.

Anne-Lee Verville, the boards chair for Dartmouth-Hitchcock, confirmed the announcement in a letter to employees, stating the board accepted Dr. Weinstein's decision "with great admiration and appreciation for all he [had] done during his many years of service."

According to the hospital, Dr. Weinstein notified board leadership of his decision in 2015. After abdicating his role as CEO and president, he will continue to serve as the Peggy Y. Thompson chair in evaluative clinical sciences at the Hanover, N.H.-based Dartmouth-Hitchcock Geisel School of Medicine and will retain his clinical and academic positions in the health system and the school's department of orthopedics.

Officials are in the process of creating a search committee to oversee the hiring and leadership transition process.

Dr. Weinstein assumed the role of inaugural president and CEO of the health system in 2011. He had previously served the system in the dual roles of president of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic and the director of the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice from 2007 until 2011.
