Northwell Health hires former NYC Health + Hospitals CEO Dr. Ram Raju

Ram Raju, MD, former CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals in New York City, joined New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health. He will serve as senior vice president and community health investment officer at Northwell.

Dr. Raju stepped down from his role at NYC Health + Hospitals in November 2016. He had served as head of the 11-hospital public health system for approximately two years. Prior to NYC Health + Hospitals, he was CEO of Chicago-based Cook County Health & Hospitals System, the nation's third-largest public health system.

In his new role, Dr. Raju will focus on developing programs and collaborating with local organizations to better serve the vulnerable communities that depend on Northwell Health for their care.

Dr. Raju has served as vice-chair of the Greater New York Hospital Association and currently sits on the boards of several organizations, including the American Hospital Association.

"Northwell Health created a position that enables me to pursue my passionate interest in improving population health and addressing the social determinants of health," said Dr. Raju in a statement. "I thoroughly enjoyed the many years I spent at NYC Health + Hospitals, which gave me valuable insight into the needs of our most-vulnerable communities and how health policies can positively influence the delivery of care and improve outcomes."
