Memorial Hermann CEO to retire at end of 2019: 7 things to know

Charles "Chuck" D. Stokes, president and CEO of Houston-based Memorial Hermann Health System, will retire at the end of the year.

Seven things to know:

1. Mr. Stokes assumed the top post at the health system in 2017.

2. He joined Memorial Hermann in 2008 as COO.

3. During his tenure, Memorial Hermann became a founding member of Civica Rx, a nonprofit generic drug company that aims to stem rising drug prices, and it launched Hometown Healing, a coordinated volunteering initiative involving Memorial Hermann staff.

4. Additionally, while he served as system CEO, Memorial Hermann Sugar Land (Texas) Hospital became the first hospital in the Houston area to receive the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award.

5. Mr. Stokes' healthcare career spans 40 years, and he has prior experience serving as president of North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo.

6. Mr. Stokes is the immediate past chairman of the American College of Healthcare Executives' Board of Governors.

7. Memorial Hermann has hired an executive search firm to identify Mr. Stokes' successor.
