Mayo Clinic Health System in Wisconsin selects 1st-ever research & innovation director: 4 notes

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic Health System appointed Timothy J. Nelson, MD, PhD, its inaugural research and innovation director for its campus in Eau Claire, Wis.

Here are four notes:

1. Dr. Nelson currently serves as director of the Todd and Karen Wanek Family Program for hypoplastic left heart syndrome as well as the medical director of the regenerative medicine consult service of the William J. von Liebig Transplant Center, both at Mayo Clinic.

2. He is also an associate professor of medicine and pharmacology for the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in Rochester as well as a grant application reviewer for the National Institutes of Health.

3. He has authored 78 publications in peer-reviewed journals and has co-authored six book chapters focused on regenerative medicine and stem cell therapies.

4. In his new role, Dr. Nelson will lead the development of a research program in Mayo Clinic's northwest Wisconsin region as well as help create research opportunities for University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire students and faculty.
