Massena Memorial Hospital CEO suddenly resigns: 6 things to know

Robert Wolleben, CEO of Massena (N.Y.) Memorial Hospital, resigned, according to a Watertown Daily Times report.

Here are six things to know:

1. The reason for Mr. Wolleben's departure from the hospital, which is owned by the town of Massena, is unclear.

2. Prior to a June 18 meeting, the Massena Town Supervisor Steven D. O’Shaughnessy and Councilman Samuel D. Carbone Jr., the town’s liaison to the board of managers that runs the hospital, privately met with Mr. Wolleben. Mr. Wolleben attended the meeting and gave the CEO report. Mr. Wolleben's resignation was announced via media releases after the June 18 meeting.

3. Mr. Wolleben became CEO of the hospital in December 2015.

4. During his tenure, he focused on Massena Memorial Hospital's transition from a municipal to a private facility. The transition is ongoing.

5. His previous experience includes serving as vice president for professional and support services at Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, N.Y., and acting CEO of the Dr. John Warner Hospital in Clinton, Ill.

6. Ann Gilpin, former president and CEO of Oswego (N.Y.) Health System, will take over as interim CEO.
