Massachusetts General Hospital appoints its first chief equity and inclusion officer

Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston named Joseph Betancourt, MD, its first vice president and chief equity and inclusion officer, effective May 15.

Dr. Betancourt has served as director of the hospital's Disparities Solutions Center, which he founded in 2005, and director of multicultural education at the hospital. He is also a primary care physician with Massachusetts General's Internal Medicine Associates, a senior scientist at the Mongan Institute at Massachusetts General and associate professor of medicine at Boston-based Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Betancourt is an expert in healthcare disparities, diversity and cross-cultural medicine and has served in several Institute of Medicine committees on those topics. He has served on Massachusetts General's Center for Diversity and Inclusion leadership team for nearly 20 years.

In his new role, Dr. Betancourt will focus on strengthening and expanding the hospital's diversity efforts and programs.

He holds a master of public health degree from Boston-based Harvard's School of Public Health, and he has completed the Commonwealth Fund-Harvard University Fellowship in Minority Health Policy.
