Intermountain CEO Dr. Marc Harrison to undergo cancer treatment

Emily Rappleye -

Intermountain Healthcare President and CEO Marc Harrison, MD, will begin treatment for the blood cancer multiple myeloma at the Salt Lake City-based health system, he announced Nov. 4.

Dr. Harrison plans to stay in the role of CEO throughout his treatment and will return to the office in 2020.

"Cancer is never good news, of course, but I have every reason to hope for a successful outcome," Dr. Harrison said in an emailed statement. "I am proud and grateful that my care will be provided by Intermountain caregivers — the best in the land. I look forward to their care and support as I continue to serve our communities as CEO of Intermountain."

Multiple myeloma is a rare form of cancer in which cancerous plasma cells accumulate in bone marrow. It does not have a cure, but can be managed as a chronic disease, Dr. Harrison noted.
