Intermountain CEO Dr. Charles Sorenson to retire in 2016: 5 things to know

Charles Sorenson, MD, president and CEO of Salt Lake City-based Intermountain Healthcare, will retire as CEO in October of 2016.

Here are five things to know about Dr. Sorenson.

1. He has been president and CEO of Intermountain since early 2009. Prior to that appointment, he was executive vice president and COO from 1998 through 2008.

2. Under Dr. Sorenson's leadership, Intermountain has "advanced its local, national and international reputation as an industry leader in evidence-based medicine," according to Intermountain Board Chairman Scott Anderson, president and CEO of Zions First National Bank.

3. Aside from his work as CEO, Dr. Sorenson also practices urologic surgery, focused primarily in oncology.

4. After he retires as CEO, he will serve as founding director of a new Intermountain Healthcare Leadership Institute. According to a news release, the institute will be home to the world-renowned Institute for Healthcare Delivery Research developed by Brent James, MD, Intermountain's chief quality officer, which attracts healthcare professionals from across the U.S. and around the world. It will also offer specialized leadership training programs for physicians and other clinical and operational leaders who have, or are capable of taking on, broader administrative responsibilities locally, nationally and internationally.

5. Intermountain Healthcare's board of trustees will conduct a national search for Dr. Sorenson's replacement.
