Vincent J. McCorkle will become president and CEO of Akron General Health System in Akron, Ohio, on Thursday, putting him in charge of a 511-bed teaching and research center, the area's largest rehabilitation services provider and several community health centers.
Commenting on his appointment, Mr. McCorkle said, "With each visit to AGHS, I became increasingly inspired by the commitment of the board of directors, the leadership of the medical staff and the management team. Their unwavering commitment to the mission of AGHS and the Akron community is palpable."
Mr. McCorkle most recently served as CEO of Sisters of Providence Health System in Springfield, Mass., where he worked since 1997. At SPHS, he was instrumental in the hospital's strategic planning efforts, helping to lead a financial turnaround, create joint ventures with physicians and implement a comprehensive plan for the hospital's future.
SPHS board of trustees chairman David Chadbourne, MD, expressed gratitude for Mr. McCorkle's guidance during trying financial times for the health system. About Mr. McCorkle's departure, he said, "He has left an indelible mark on an organization that, thanks in large part to his hard work, is well-poised to continue the healing legacy of the Sisters of Providence well into the future."
Mr. McCorkle was an active resident of Springfield, the town he called home for 17 years before moving to Akron with his family. He has served on various community agencies, such as the Economic Development Council, Business Friends of the Arts, Health Start Committee and Springfield YMCA. He was recognized for his community service in 2006 when he received the William Pynchon Award, named for Springfield's founder.
Mr. McCorkle received his MBA from Widener University in Chester, Penn.
