Colorado Hospital Association CEO Steven Summer to retire after 13-year tenure

Steven J. Summer, the long-serving president and CEO of Colorado Hospital Association, plans to retire at the end of the year.

Mr. Summer became president and CEO of the association, which represents more than 100-member hospitals and health systems, in 2006. He previously worked at the West Virginia Hospital Association and Maryland Hospital Association.

During his tenure at Colorado Hospital Association, it helped create the state's hospital provider fee that improved reimbursement and helped hospitals prepare for the expansion of Medicaid. Mr. Summer also expanded services the association offers and established its Center for Health Information and Data Analytics.

Chris Tholen, executive vice president of the association, will become its new president and CEO, effective Jan. 1, 2020. He has worked at the association since 2013, when he joined as vice president of financial policy and CFO. He previously worked at Oakland, Calif.-based Kaiser Permanente and Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic. He also has served on the boards of the Colorado Healthcare Financing Management Association and Colorado Association of Healthcare Executives.
