Cleveland Clinic pharmacy chief named CEO of American Pharmacists Association

The American Pharmacists Association has named Scott J. Knoer, PharmD, executive vice president and CEO, effective July 1.

Dr. Knoer is Cleveland Clinic's chief pharmacy officer, responsible for nearly 1,600 pharmacy full-time equivalents and a $1.4 billion drug budget. He will be the American Pharmacists Association's 13th CEO and executive vice president.

"I have advocated hard for pharmacy throughout my career, and I'm excited to officially represent the entire profession, helping APhA to empower pharmacists to care for patients," Dr. Knoer said in a news release.

"Healthcare is transforming at a staggering pace," he added. "While innovative medications are treating diseases once thought incurable, they often come at a price that is unsustainable for society. APhA will not only fight so pharmacists can care for their patients, but we will also fight to ensure that patients have access to affordable drug therapy."

Dr. Knoer succeeds Thomas E. Menighan, who in 2019 announced his plans to retire this year as CEO and executive vice president of the American Pharmacists Association. Dr. Knoer will not stay at Cleveland Clinic. He plans to work alongside Mr. Menighan as CEO-designate starting May 1, then officially become CEO of the association July 1.

Dr. Knoer joined Cleveland Clinic in 2011. Previously, he held pharmacy leadership positions at the University of Minnesota Medical Center in Fairview and the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.
