Sherry Perkins, PhD, RN, president and CEO of Cheverly-based University of Maryland Capital Region Health, resigned May 24 to take another job, according to The Washington Post.

Dr. Perkins, who was helm of the organization since 2016, said in a statement cited by The Post that she accepted another healthcare position in Delaware and is relocating.

With a new hospital slated to open in Largo, Md., in 2021, Dr. Perkins said she is leaving Capital Region Health "knowing it has a bright future ahead."

Before Dr. Perkins was appointed president and CEO of Capital Region Health, she served as executive vice president and COO of the organization.

Her resignation comes amid a scandal involving the board of University of Maryland Medical System, which is based in Baltimore. The scandal erupted after reports found UMMS paid then- Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh $500,000 for 100,000 copies of her "Healthy Holly" children's books while she was a member of the UMMS board. The scandal also involved other board members who made money from deals with UMMS while serving on the board. Multiple board members, including Ms. Pugh, have since resigned.

UMMS spokesperson Michael Schwartzberg told The Post the resignation was not connected to the scandal.
