California Hospital Association CEO Duane Dauner to retire

Staff -

Longtime President and CEO of the California Hospital Association Duane Dauner will retire when his employment agreement ends Dec. 31, 2018.

Mr. Dauner has served as president and CEO of CHA since 1985. CHA represents more than 400 hospitals and health systems in California. Previously, he was CEO of the Missouri Hospital Association from 1975 to 1985, and he was with the Kansas Hospital Association from 1965 to 1975.

Throughout his tenure at CHA, Mr. Dauner has been a leading advocate for state and federal public policies that improve access to high-quality, affordable healthcare for Californians. In 1994, he co-authored the book, The Health Care Solution: Understanding the Crisis and the Cure, which presents ideas for expanding healthcare coverage and aligning financial incentives in the healthcare delivery system. More than 10 years later, Mr. Dauner was again in the forefront of the healthcare reform debate, first in California in 2007 providing recommendations and guidance to then Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and legislative leaders to enact state-level reforms, and in 2010 as Congress and the Obama administration developed the ACA.

To ensure continuity in leadership and executive management, CHA enlisted Witt/Kieffer to conduct a nationwide search to find Mr. Dauner's replacement. After the new president and CEO is employed and onboard, Mr. Dauner will serve the organization as a consultant until December 31, 2018.
