Barnabas Health shakes up leadership: 16 things to know

Barnabas Health, based in West Orange, N.J., has made several changes and additions to its senior leadership.

Officials said the changes and additions are designed "to enhance strategic alignment and to better serve the social, human and health needs of the residents of New Jersey."

Here are 16 things to know about the leaders.

Joe Hicks, president and CEO of the Barnabas Health Behavioral Health Center and Network, will retire Jan. 31. 

1. Mr. Hicks has been in the behavioral health services field for more than four decades.

2. He joined Shoreline Behavioral Health (now Barnabas Health Behavioral Health Center) in 1994 as vice president, and the following year was named president and CEO.

3. During his tenure, he founded Barnabas Health Management Services, comprised of the employee assistance program, administrative services organization, physician referral service, and the Behavioral Health Access Center.  He also guided the development and expansion of the Institute for Prevention and established the Corporate Care product line. 

4. Previously, Mr. Hicks was president and CEO of Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood, N.J. (now Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus).

Jennifer Velez, senior vice president of strategy and planning, was named senior vice president of population and behavioral health integration at Barnabas Health.

5. Ms. Valez's new role is effective immediately.

6. In her new role, her focus will be on the health of communities served by Barnabas Health, understanding the societal and economic issues of primarily the urban Medicaid community served by Barnabas Health and correlating needs with improving the health of populations. She will also directly oversee all aspects of Barnabas Health Behavioral Health. 

7. Prior to Barnabas Health, Ms. Velez was commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Human Services.

Deanna Sperling, RN, CNO of Barnabas Health Behavioral Health Center and COO of the Barnabas Health Behavioral Health Network, has been named president and CEO of the Barnabas Health Behavioral Health Center in Toms River, N.J.

8. Ms. Sperling will begin her new role Feb. 1.

9. She began her career with Barnabas Health as a registered nurse in 1985 and has held several leadership positions since. 

10. She earned a diploma from the school of nursing at St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell, N.Y., a bachelor's degree in nursing from Bloomfield (N.J.) College and a master's degree in administrative sciences from Fairleigh Dickenson University in Teaneck, N.J. 

11. She is certified in psychiatric-mental health nursing and as a nurse executive through the American Nurses Credentialing Center.

Michael Mimoso, interim president and CEO of Community Medical Center in Toms River, will become the permanent president and CEO.

12. Mr. Mimoso has served in the interim position since July 2015.

13. Previously, he was president and CEO of Monmouth Medical Center, Southern Campus in Lakewood, N.J.

John Brennan, MD, president and CEO of Newark (N.J.) Beth Israel Medical Center and Children's Hospital of New Jersey, has accepted a position with Marietta, Ga.-based WellStar Health System as executive vice president, effective Feb. 5. 

14. Previously, Dr. Brennan was senior vice president of clinical and emergency services at Barnabas Health.

Darrell Terry Sr., COO of NBIMC and CHoNJ, will serve as interim president and CEO, effective Feb. 5, while a national search is conducted for Dr. Brennan's replacement. 

15. Mr. Terry has more than three decades of experience in healthcare administration at three major New Jersey healthcare companies and has held several leadership positions at Barnabas Health.

16. Mr. Terry received a master's degree in public health from the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University in New York City; a master's degree in health administration and a graduate certificate in healthcare management from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.; and a bachelor's degree and a certificate in business management from Rutgers University in New Jersey.
