Ascension CEO to step down at the end of 2019: 8 things to know

St. Louis-based Ascension President and CEO Anthony R. Tersigni, EdD, is retiring Dec. 31, ending a 15-year tenure.

Eight things to know:

1. Dr. Tersigni became president and CEO of Ascension Health in 2004.

2. In 2012, when Ascension was formed as the parent organization of Ascension Health and its other direct subsidiaries, he became its first president and CEO.

3. Today, he oversees 151 hospitals and 50-plus senior living facilities in 21 states and the District of Columbia.

4. During his tenure, Dr. Tersigni spearheaded the full integration of Ascension's national health ministry and he updated the organization's strategic direction.

5. He also championed the 'dual transformation' model at Ascension, which involves optimizing core healthcare operations while creating transformational new models to drive growth.

6. Prior to 2004, Dr. Tersigni served as Ascension Health's COO for three years.

7. He is a past board chair of the Catholic Health Association of the United States and a current member of the Healthcare Leadership Council, where he co-chairs the Care Management Workgroup related to the opioid epidemic.

8. Post-retirement, he will continue to serve as a member of the executive committee of Ascension's healthcare investment fund as well as offer consultative services to the organization.
