Anuja Vaidya -

James J. Barba, president and CEO of Albany (N.Y.) Medical Center, is planning to retire, effective March 31, 2020.

Mr. Barba has served in the top post at Albany Med since 1995. During his tenure, Mr. Barba stabilized the organization's finances after years of losses and oversaw several capital projects, such as a renovated and expanded emergency department and a $360 million patient pavilion. Additionally, under his leadership, the organization entered into affiliations with Columbia Memorial Health in Hudson, N.Y., and Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

Mr. Barba previously served as a trustee during the merger of Albany Medical Center Hospital with Albany Medical College in the 1980s, which led to the creation of Albany Med, an academic medical center.

He also has a history of public service, serving on and later chairing the Capital Region Economic Development Council. He also chaired New York State's Special Advisory Commission to restore Empire Blue Cross/Blue Shield in 1993.

The organization will name a new president and CEO this summer.
