Medford, Mass.-based Hallmark Health President and CEO Alan Macdonald is retiring, after 20 years with the health system, according to a Boston Business Journal report. The announcement comes just one year after Burlington, Mass.-based Wellforce acquired Hallmark Health.

Mr. Macdonald led Hallmark Health since March 2015. Prior to that, he served in a number of roles at Hallmark, including executive vice president for strategy and public affairs. He is also a founding member and past chairman of Hallmark Health's board of trustees.

The health system recently experienced financial difficulties, resulting in layoffs. In June, Hallmark officials said around 65 people will lose their jobs as part of a plan to cut inpatient services at Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford. The health system also announced layoffs affecting 57 employees in November 2016.

Hallmark Health officially joined Wellforce Jan. 1. Previously, Hallmark was in merger talks with Boston-based Partners HealthCare. However, the plan fell through in December 2015 due to opposition from state officials and antitrust experts.

Mr. Macdonald will continue in his roles until a replacement is selected. He plans to serve on the board of trustees after stepping down, according to the report.
