CFO Scott Leckey: Tri-Athlete With a Lean Balance Sheet

Staff -
Almost two years ago, Scott Leckey's wife shot it straight to him: He was getting overweight. Since then, he has lost more than 50 pounds by participating in triathlons, but Mr. Leckey's personal figure is not the only thing he keeps in shape.

Scott Leckey is CFO of Banner Boswell Medical Center. As CFO of Banner Boswell Medical Center in Sun City, Ariz., Mr. Leckey is tasked with overseeing all financial operations. According to the most current data from the American Hospital Directory, BBMC recorded $1.43 billion in total revenue last year and net income of $29.4 million for a 2.1 percent operating margin.

Mr. Leckey has more than 20 years of healthcare financial experience and has served as CFO at numerous other non-profit and for-profit hospitals, including Banner Estrella Medical Center in Phoenix, Mountain Vista Medical Center in Mesa, Ariz., and Kona Community Hospital in Kealakekua, Hawaii.

While he has excelled in triathlons, the healthcare industry has somewhat hit a wall and now faces shrinking reimbursements across the board, especially in Medicare and Medicaid. So what gives Mr. Leckey optimism?

"Sometimes, it's hard, I gotta tell you," Mr. Leckey says. "But we're all here to save lives. That's the whole reason I entered this field. I enjoyed my experiences as a patient and on the operations side. Even though reimbursements are down, at least we know we're making a difference in people's lives."
