Tommy Mullins joined the staff at Boone Memorial Hospital in Madison, W.Va., in 1964, when the hospital first opened its doors, as a bookkeeper. He became administrator of the hospital in 1968 and is the longest tenured CEO in West Virginia.
Boone Memorial Hospital has grown and changed under Mr. Mullins' leadership. For instance, he led the hospital's transition from a county-owned hospital to a 501-c-3 nonprofit organization and helped secure funding for the construction of a new hospital. Additionally, in November 2013, a new pulmonary rehabilitation center opened at BMH.
In addition to his work growing BMH, Mr. Mullins has been instrumental in promoting small rural hospitals in West Virginia and the nation. He is a founding member of the WV Hospital Association-Committee for Small Rural Hospitals and a member of the Small Rural Task Force for The Joint Commission. Mr. Mullins has also served on the American Hospital Association section for small rural hospitals and has been on the board of the Center for Rural Health Development in the past.
Mr. Mullins' dedication to rural healthcare has earned him state and national recognition. For instance, he has been named a Distinguished West Virginian — the state's highest honor — twice for his accomplishments in his community and in rural health. He was also named as one of Becker's Hospital Review's "50 Rural Hospital CEOs to Know" in 2014, and has received the Outstanding Rural Health Achievement Award from the WV Rural Health Conference, among many other commendations.
