CEO Ronald Peterson: Serving Johns Hopkins Hospital and Health System for Nearly 40 Years

Ronald Peterson has officially served as president of Johns Hopkins Hospital & Health System in Baltimore since February 1997. Immediately prior, he had served as acting president. Mr. Peterson has been with Johns Hopkins since 1973 when he took an administrative assistant position. Since then, his contribution to the U.S. News & World Report's best-rated hospital for 21 consecutive years has been immeasurable.

He provides oversight for Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in Baltimore; Howard County General Hospital in Columbia, Md.; Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Md.; Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C.; All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg, Fla.; and Johns Hopkins Hospital. Mr. Peterson also serves as executive vice president of Johns Hopkins Medicine and as chairman of Johns Hopkins Community Physicians, which provides ambulatory care at 35 locations throughout Maryland and the Washington, D.C. area

One of Mr. Peterson's notable contributions to Johns Hopkins was transforming the Baltimore City Hospital into Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center in 1982. He directed a $100 million physical redevelopment program and turned a $7 million a year loss into a positive bottom-line performance. Mr. Peterson served as president of the medical center from 1984 to 1999.

Mr. Peterson is a member of the board of governors of the University HealthSystem Consortium, vice chairman of the Governor's Workforce Investment Board and holds an appointment to the Notre Dame of Maryland University President's Advisory Council. He also holds an appointment to the Joint Commission Center for Transforming Health Care's Leadership Advisory Council. In 2005, Mr. Peterson was inducted into the Maryland Business Hall of Fame.
