Former CEO Richard J.J. Sullivan, Jr.: Keeping the Faith at Catholic Health Services of Long Island

Staff -

Richard J.J. Sullivan, Jr., served as president and CEO of Catholic Health Services of Long Island, a Rockville Centre, N.Y.-based comprehensive system comprised of six hospitals, three nursing homes, a regional home care and hospice network and community-based agency, from December 2012 through June 2013.

Even though he became CEO just recently, Mr. Sullivan's links to CHS of Long Island are deep. He served on the board for more than 10 years and, when the previous president and CEO retired, Mr. Sullivan was nominated and confirmed as executive chairman until a successor could be found to lead the system. In this unpaid role, Mr. Sullivan served as chief executive of CHS from July 2011 until April 2012. Mr. Sullivan has also held leadership positions in the governance of Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center and Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Care Center, both members of CHS of Long Island in West Islip, N.Y.

In 2012, Mr. Sullivan was awarded the Trustee Leadership and Advocacy Award by Healthcare Trustees of New York State for his contributions as CHS of Long Island's executive chairman. While he served as chairman, Standard & Poor's raised the system's rating to "A-" and indicated a stable outlook, among other accomplishments.

Beyond his links to CHS, Mr. Sullivan also has deep roots in the Catholic faith. In 2012, he was invested by the Holy See with the signal papal honor, Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, the highest medal that can be awarded by the Church to the laity. His devotion to his faith carries over into his leadership at CHS of Long Island. "Today, we in Catholic healthcare, or faith-based health generally, must be watchful to protect our freedom to administer care within this millennial aged, philosophical context of our faith," Mr. Sullivan says.

Immediately prior to his role at CHS, Mr. Sullivan was the chairman and CEO of the CM&F Group, a New York City-based insurance brokerage and agency. He holds the designation of certified insurance counselor and has served as president of the Insurance Brokers' Association of the State of New York and the Insurance Federation of New York. Mr. Sullivan is a member of the Insurance Board for the Diocese of Rockville Centre, as well as a former member of the Board of the National Association of Insurance Brokers and is a current member of the American Foreign Service Association.
