Paul S. Viviano has served as CEO of UC San Diego Health System since June 1, 2012. He also serves as associate vice chancellor for UC San Diego Health Sciences.
Mr. Viviano has a long history of healthcare leadership in a variety of organizations. Prior to joining San Diego's only academic health system, Mr. Viviano was chairman of the board and CEO of Newport Beach, Calif.-based Alliance HealthCare Services, the nation's largest provider of advanced outpatient diagnostic imaging services. During his time at the helm there, he developed the strategic path and expanded Alliance's technology platform. He continues to serve as a member of the board of directors of Alliance HealthCare Services.
He has also served as president and CEO of USC University Hospital in Los Angeles and USC/Norris Cancer Hospital, and as executive vice president and CEO of the St. Joseph Health System in Orange, Calif., among several other leadership roles.
"Mr. Viviano has a solid track record of strategic leadership and entrepreneurism that drives results. He has a hands-on philosophy of working with clinicians and researchers to insure outstanding patient care — exactly the kind of skills needed to elevate levels of innovation and quality as UC San Diego Health System grows," David Brenner, MD, vice chancellor for Health Sciences and dean of the School of Medicine at UC San Diego, said in a news release when Mr. Viviano was appointed CEO of the system.
With Mr. Viviano controlling the reins, in 2013 UC San Diego Health System was ranked as the best in the San Diego metropolitan area and fifth in California by U.S. News & World Report and received an "A" grade from The Leapfrog Group for hospital safety.
Beyond his duties leading UC San Diego Health System, Mr. Viviano is a member of the board of trustees at Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles and also serves as chair of the governance committee, a member of the finance committee and chair of the Bioethics Institute there. He is also a member of the National Association for Quality Imaging.
Mr. Viviano earned his master's degree in public administration-public health at University of California Los Angeles and is a Los Angeles native.
