CEO Patrick Wardell: High-Value Leadership at Cambridge Health Alliance

Patrick Wardell assumed the position of CEO of Cambridge (Mass.) Health Alliance in March. As CEO, Mr. Wardell oversees the health system's three hospitals: Cambridge Hospital, Somerville (Mass.) Hospital and Whidden Hospital in Everett, Mass. He is also responsible for leading the health system in its journey to transform itself into a high-performing, high-value accountable care organization with a patient-centered medical home model of care.

Mr. Wardell has held numerous healthcare leadership positions in the past, preparing him for his role as CEO of Cambridge Health. Prior to joining CHA, Mr. Wardell spent six years as president and CEO of Hurley Medical Center in Flint, Mich., a $360 million, 463-bed teaching hospital. During his tenure, he played an integral role in reversing a seven-year cumulative loss of $34 million to a $7 million surplus in two years. Mr. Wardell also established the Hurley Children's Hospital and constructed a $30 million state-of-the-art emergency trauma center. Previously, Mr. Wardell served as regional senior vice president and executive director for St. Mary's Hospital and St. Joseph's Hospital in New York City and president and CEO of St. Joseph's Healthcare System in Paterson, N.J.  

Mr. Wardell has served on various boards including those for the National Association of Public Hospitals and Health Systems, the Michigan Hospital Association and Whaley Children's Center.
