CEO John Haupert: Turning Around Grady Health System, Atlanta's Essential Safety Net

Staff -
John Haupert, FACHE, has served as president and CEO of Grady Health System in Atlanta since October 2011.

Mr. Haupert started his career in healthcare management in 1992 with Methodist Health System in Dallas where he served in various administrative roles. He has also served as COO of Parkland Memorial Hospital.

When Mr. Haupert joined Grady, the safety-net system was in financial trouble and was running at a net loss of $30 million each year, according to Grady CFO Mark Meyer. With Mr. Haupert's direction and guidance, the system is slowly getting back on its feet. "My goal is to get us to a level of financial stability that has us at least annually on a break-even status," he told Georgia Health News in February 2012, and the system stands to continue improving in 2013.

Outside of the time spent focusing on Grady, Mr. Haupert is involved in several community organizations. He is a member of the Atlanta Rotary Club and is on the board of directors for Central Atlanta Progress and The Atlanta Committee for Progress. In the past, he has served as chairman of the board of trustees at the Dallas/Fort Worth Hospital Council, chairman of the board of directors for CareFlite and a delegate to the American Hospital Association's Regional Policy Board.

Mr. Haupert earned a master's degree in healthcare administration from Trinity University in San Antonio.
