CEO Elaine Thompson: University of South Florida Health System

Elaine Thompson, PhD, is the CEO of the new University of South Florida Health System. She previously served as president and CEO of Lakeland (Fla.) Regional Medical Center. She oversees the 851-bed hospital that houses one of the busiest single-site emergency rooms in the state, as well as a Level II trauma center and a Level II neonatal intensive care unit.

Ms. Thompson joined Lakeland Regional in September 2010. Since then, she has been committed to delivering quality and safe healthcare to patients and their families. According to Lakeland's "Report to the Community," Ms. Thompson focuses on quality healthcare by offering a patient experience that is consistent with individual physical, emotional, spiritual, environmental and socio-cultural preferences. Towards that effort, she has instigated several service and technology improvements throughout the hospital.

Ms. Thompson is lead the medical center in a conversion to electronic medical records in its emergency department and perioperative services areas. Additionally, the hospital began pediatric services at its Lakeland Regional Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine Clinic, upgraded surgical systems and radiation therapy capabilities and opened new critical care, pediatric and triage areas in the emergency department.

Before her appointment as Lakeland Regional CEO, Ms. Thompson served as president of Lankenau Hospital in Wynnewood, Pa., and executive vice president and COO of St. Luke's Hospital and Health Network in Coaldale, Pa.
