CEO Edgar Curtis: Life-Long Career With Memorial Health System

Staff -
Edgar Curtis, FACHE, MBA, has served as president and CEO of Memorial Health System, a three-hospital system based in Springfield, Ill., since January 2008.

Even though Mr. Curtis took the helm at Memorial Health System in 2008, his history with the system dates back to 1975 when he joined Memorial Medical Center in Springfield as a registered nurse. From there, he held management and administrative positions before being named senior vice president and COO in 1994. He served as COO until being named president and CEO.

Since taking the top position at Memorial Health System, Mr. Curtis has led the system through the changing world of healthcare. For instance, in October 2012, Memorial Health System partnered with Saint Luke's Health System in Kansas City, Mo., BJC Healthcare in St. Louis and Cox Health in Springfield, Mo., to create The BJC Collaborative. "Through this collaborative, we will work together to treat more patients, lower our costs and deliver higher quality care," Mr. Curtis explained in a news release. "The BJC Collaborative will create many opportunities for us to grow and learn from one another."

Outside of his duties overseeing the health system, Mr. Curtis is involved in the Central Illinois and healthcare communities. On the healthcare side, he is involved with VHA Mid-America and serves on the board of the Illinois Foundation for Performance Excellence and the Illinois Hospital Association. In the general community, he serves on the board of the Springfield Urban League and has served on the United Way of Central Illinois' board and the board of Downtown Springfield, Inc.

Mr. Curtis earned his MBA from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
