CEO Duane Erwin: Lawyer Turned Healthcare Leader at Aspirus

Staff -
Duane Erwin, JD, FACHE, has served as CEO of Aspirus, a non-profit, community-directed health system in Wausau, Wis., since January 2006.

Mr. Erwin did not originally start his career in the healthcare field. He first earned a law degree from the Duquesne University School of Law in Pittsburgh and was a private practice lawyer for several years. He then became interested in healthcare and now has more than 30 years of healthcare leadership experience.

Throughout his career in healthcare, Mr. Erwin served as president of Parkview Hospital and executive vice president of Parkview Health in Fort Wayne, Ind., and held positions at Franciscan Health Partnership in Albany, N.Y.; Franciscan Health System of Cincinnati; Lancaster (Pa.) General Hospital; Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton, Ohio; and Blue Cross of Lehigh Valley in Allentown, Pa.

During his time at Aspirus, Mr. Erwin has kept his eye on the physician shortage that has been looming over the country. That is why when the Medical College of Wisconsin announced it would open a campus in Wausau, he was pleased. "Having students trained in the region helps make sure those physicians stay in the area to provide the care we need to provide," Mr. Erwin told the Wausau Daily Herald.

In recognition of his years of success in healthcare, Mr. Erwin was named to Becker's Hospital Review's list of the Top Hospital and Health System Leaders to Know in 2011 and 2012.

After a long, successful career, Mr. Erwin recently announced he will retire at the end of 2013.
