CEO Dr. Robert Grossman: Prolific Leader of NYU Langone Medical Center

Robert Grossman assumed responsibility as dean and CEO of NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City in July 2007. As dean and CEO, he leads NYU School of Medicine and NYU Hospitals Center, the latter comprising Tisch Hospital, the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine and the Hospital for Joint Diseases. Under his tenure, Tisch Hospital and the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine received Magnet designation twice. The NYU Langone Medial Center also received the Joint Commission's gold seal of approval and $259 million in research awards in 2010.

Robert Grossman is a prolific leader of NYU Langone Medical CenterDr. Grossman joined NYU in 2001 as the Louis Marx Professor of Radiology, chairman of the department of radiology and professor of neurology, neurosurgery, physiology and neuroscience. Prior to those positions, he had been professor of radiology, neurosurgery and neurology; chief of neuroradiology; and associate chairman of radiology at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.

"As a professor of radiology, neurology, neurosurgery, physiology and neuroscience, and department chair of radiology, I acquired many skills pivotal to my role as dean and CEO. I learned there is great value in setting a clear strategic vision and delivering on the promises made. It is important to create a culture of transparency and accountability and enable individuals to fulfill their potential. My career enabled me to sample many environments and issues all of which served to better equip me for this position," says Dr. Grossman.

Dr. Grossman is a prolific and successful scientist. His work has received many awards and recognitions. Dr. Grossman was awarded the Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award by the National Institutes of Health in 1999 for his work on multiple sclerosis. In 2004, he was the first recipient of the American Society of Neuroradiology Education and Research Foundation's annual Outstanding Contributions in Research Award in recognition of lifelong accomplishment and consistent excellence in clinical neuroscience. In 2012, Dr. Grossman received the International Society in Magnetic Resonance in Medicine's Gold Medal for his pioneering research in magnetic resonance in medicine and biology.

Along with his award-winning research, Dr. Grossman has been a passionate educator and widely published scholar. He has trained over 100 fellows and has authored over 300 publications and five books.
