CEO Dr. Larry Kaiser: In Pursuit of Financial Longevity for Temple University Health System

Larry Kaiser, MD, serves as CEO of Temple University Health System in Philadelphia, senior executive vice president for health sciences and dean of the Temple University School of Medicine. He is responsible for leading and directing the health system and the university's School of Medicine in a unified, integrated and shared strategic vision.

Dr. Kaiser has only served as CEO since April 2011, yet he has already begun laying groundwork to bolster the health system's longevity and financial sustainability. His strategic plan includes transactions with other healthcare organizations, physician recruitment and balancing out Temple's Medicaid patient population. Thus far, he has engineered an $83.8 million purchase of Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia and overseen the opening of an outpatient facility in Oaks, Pa. He has also recruited over a dozen new physicians to Temple University Hospital.

Before arriving at Temple University Health, Dr. Kaiser served as president and Alkek-Williams Chair of the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston. Prior to that, he served as the John Rhea Barton professor, chair of the department of surgery and surgeon-in-chief of the University of Pennsylvania Health System in Philadelphia.

Dr. Kaiser's research interests include lung cancer, malignant mesothelioma and mediastinal tumors. He is the author or co-author of 13 books and 250 original papers.
