CEO Dr. James Weinstein: Multidisciplinary Leader of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Healthcare System

James Weinstein, DO, MS, is the CEO of Dartmouth-Hitchcock health system in Lebanon, N.H., which includes the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center and facilities across New Hampshire. He was appointed in November 2011. Under his leadership, Dartmouth-Hitchcock is working to create a "sustainable health system" for patients, providers, payors and communities.

Dr. Weinstein has advanced "informed choice" as CEO of Dartmouth-Hitchcock. In 1999, he established the Center for Shared Decision-Making, where patient preferences and values are an integral part of diagnostic and treatment decisions. He is a founding member of the national Collaborative for High Value Healthcare, a partnership among The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, Dartmouth-Hitchcock, Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., Cleveland Clinic, Intermountain Healthcare in Salt Lake City and Denver Health. The Collaborative seeks to improve healthcare while lowering costs by developing best practices in care across a range of common and costly conditions and treatments. Dr. Weinstein also founded the multidisciplinary Spine Center at Dartmouth, which has become an international model for patient-centered healthcare delivery.

Beyond leading Dartmouth-Hitchcock, Dr. Weinstein is a spine surgeon and health services researcher with more than 250 published articles. He earned his medical degree from the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in 1977. Dr. Weinstein is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and serves on the standing Committee of Medical Experts to Assist Social Security on Disability Issues. He is a member of the National Quality Forum's Resource Use Committee, which focuses on establishing measures for health outcomes and productivity. Dr. Weinstein also works with the ONC on an ongoing basis in the area of meaningful use and quality measures.

Prior to serving as CEO of Dartmouth-Hitchcock, Dr. Weinstein served as president of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic and director of The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice. His dual positions allowed him to build critical linkages between groundbreaking health services research and clinical care. During this time, he co-founded The Dartmouth Center for Health Care Delivery Science with past Dartmouth College President and president-elect of the World Bank, Jim Yong Kim.
