Why AI is being used more in clinical workflows, quality reports

Artificial intelligence can be trained to complete the smallest and most meticulous administrative tasks, which can help hospitals and health systems derive more intelligent EHR data.

At Becker's Hospital Review's 5th Annual Health IT + Revenue Cycle event in Chicago on Oct. 11, Vitaly Herasevich, MD, PhD, anesthesiology and medicine professor at Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic, led a session on quality reports and clinical workflows within the EHR.

During the presentation, Dr. Herasevich discussed the benefits of applying AI technology to clinical data and EHRs when generating quality reports.

Why is AI becoming more popular today?

1. After EHRs became more prevalent in hospitals and health systems, the increase in data volume and storage contributed to the increased use of AI. As an electronic platform, the EHR can do infinitely more; whereas paper records, which were used to document patients' health information prior to EHRs, cannot support artificial intelligence.

2. Most clinicians, and even doctoral students, have access to a computer now when previously hospitals and health systems had a limited supply onsite. This improvement in computing power helped support AI, which can analyze clinical data and work 24/7 to send constant feedback to providers to give them insights into the quality of patient care.
