Who will spend more money on technology in 2017: Marketing officers or CIOs?

Staff -

A new report from analyst firm Gartner predicts chief marketing officers will likely outspend CIOs on technology in 2017, according to CIO.com.

According to a company survey given to marketing and technology department leaders in the U.S. and U.K., chief marketing officers currently spend 3.24 percent of their organization's budget on technology, while CIOs spend 3.4 percent of their total budget. But Gartner analysts expect that to change in the upcoming year.

"Marketing is now responsible for critical customer-facing, revenue-generating systems and applications," Jake Sorofman, Gartner's research vice president, wrote in the report. "As the marketing leaders' mandate broadens, we are seeing the CMOs' marketing tech spending approach the levels of the CIOs' technology spend."
