What's next in AI for healthcare? Medical diagnostics, clinical trial enrollment, report says

Medical diagnostics, clinical trial enrollment, healthcare biometrics and drug discovery will be among the biggest artificial intelligence trends in 2019, according to a report from market research firm CB Insights.

CB Insights examined 25 of the biggest AI trends to determine what's next for the technology in 2019. The firm assessed each of the trends based on industry adoption and market strength, and categorized them as "necessary," "experimental," "threatening" or "transitory."

Four of the healthcare applications outlined in the report:

1. Medical imaging and diagnostics. CB Insights categorized AI for medical imaging and diagnostics as "necessary," meaning this application is already experiencing widespread adoption in the industry.

2. Clinical trial enrollment. Clinical trial enrollment fell into the firm's "experimental" category, as an early-stage trend with a few functional products, despite low adoption so far.

3. Advanced healthcare biometrics. Advanced biometrics — such as using AI to identify disease risk from retinal images or voice patterns — were another AI application in the report's "experimental" category.

4. Drug discovery. CB Insights determined drug discovery was a "transitory" AI application, meaning that there has been adoption in the industry, but stakeholders are uncertain about the market opportunity.
