What hospital inefficiencies drive operational challenges? CIOs weigh in

Julie Spitzer -

Available EHR data isn't that helpful for managing a hospital's operational efficiencies, according to a recent survey of hospital CIOs.

The College of Healthcare Information Management Executives and LeanTaaS, a Santa Clara, Calif.-based software company, asked hospital CIOs about their vision for improving hospital revenue and operating margins.

Here are four survey insights.

1. Here's how CIOs responded when asked to name the most effective use of EHR data:

  • Improving clinical outcomes: 24 percent
  • Increasing operational efficiencies: 10 percent
  • Reducing readmissions: 6 percent
  • Reducing unnecessary admissions: 2 percent

2. The top two practices CIOs cited to improve  operational efficiencies were reducing labor costs (35 percent) and increasing emergency and operating room efficiency (27 percent).

3. Fifty-two percent of CIOs said optimizing equipment use was the best way to increase revenue.

4. Fifty-four percent of CIOs cited budgeting limitations as the biggest constraint to launching new initiatives.
