A software update introduced new code that caused the problem, which was discovered Feb. 24, according to the Seattle Times. The website, Washington Healthplanfinder, charged some individuals as much as three times their insurance premiums. Officials at the Washington Health Benefit Exchange, which manages the website, noticed the problem when they saw the exchange had more money than expected in its account, according to the report.
This is not the first issue the website has had with payments. Many customers faced delays last summer when they attempted to enroll, their payments not reaching insurers, according to a June report from the Seattle Times. In total, approximately 28,000 people experienced difficulty signing up for health insurance through the website over the first seven months of 2014, according to the Puget Sound Business Journal.
