Indianapolis-based American Senior Communities has fallen victim to a W-2 email scam impacting all of its more than 17,000 employees, according to The Indianapolis Star.

In mid-January, an American Senior Communities payroll processing employee received an email from someone claiming to be a company executive. The employee forwarded employees' W-2 tax information, including names, Social Security numbers and addresses.

The nursing home chain became aware of the W-2 scam on Feb. 17, when some employees said their tax returns had been rejected.

American Senior Communities notified the Internal Revenue Service, the Indiana Department of Revenue, the Indiana Office of the Attorney General and law enforcement officials of the scam. It also plans to provide impacted employees with free credit monitoring services and has set up a toll-free number to answer employees' questions.

"ASC takes privacy seriously and deeply regrets that the incident occurred and offer our sincerest apologies to everyone affected," the nursing home chain said in a statement.
