Viewpoint: 5 things CIOs can do to easily implement IoT

Julie Spitzer -

As internet of things devices become more prevalent in healthcare, CIOs are seeking out strategies to securely implement the new technologies, writes Subho Halder, CTO at Appknox, in an op-ed for Help Net Security.

Here are five things a CIO can do to mitigate challenges when implementing IoT devices in the workplace.

1. Build a basic benefits framework. Be sure that each IoT project has a clearly defined objective backed by a business goal, Mr. Halder writes.

2. Securing IoT deployments. It's important to ensure the devices are secure from cyberattacks. Three things are key to ensuring a secure deployment: device identity; a strong and scalable network; and physical and data security.

3. Focus on the devices. Here are three steps to ensure the security is maintained on the devices: a strong identification including hardware-based security; advanced data encryption methods; and trust in device vendors and manufacturers.

4. Skills development. Create a dedicated IoT team to design and grow the department. The team should handle design, tests, deployment and growth of the IoT products at the organization.

5. Organization structure and risk management. Employee training and stakeholder engagement through education on how to securely interact with IoT devices is imperative. Employees should understand the risk associated with IoT products and the organization should be prepared to manage them.

"If your organization is one of those ready to adopt IoT today, there's a high probability they’ll continue to leverage its advantages in the near future," Mr. Halder writes. "In that scenario, your role as the CIO will only get more important and critical, especially to ensure that everything runs smoothly and securely."
