Verily partners with 2 healthcare organizations to address population health

Andrea Park -

Verily has partnered with the VA Palo Alto (Calif.) Health Care System and Newton, Mass.-based Atrius Health to develop data-driven solutions to challenges in population health and care delivery, the Alphabet life sciences subsidiary announced Oct. 24.

Both organizations will leverage Verily's data analytics and product development expertise to research and implement new tools and interventions to improve the healthcare experience for both patients and providers, Vivian Lee, MD, Verily's president of health platforms, said in the announcement.

VA Palo Alto Health Care System will focus specifically on analyzing its care delivery in high-priority condition areas, beginning with total knee arthroplasty, acute myocardial infarction and alcohol withdrawal, in order to improve quality and efficiency in those areas.

Atrius Health, meanwhile, will work with Verily to analyze population health data. By identifying risk factors for hospitalization and possible interventions to mitigate that risk for heart failure patients, the partners will be able to deploy tools that will ultimately reduce avoidable hospitalizations and emergency department visits.

The organizations join what Dr. Lee described as a "growing community of health systems, accountable care organizations and government entities" already working with Verily to improve outcomes and reduce waste in the healthcare industry. Other recently added members of the community include Mayo Clinic, Kettering Health Network, genomics platform Color and several large pharmaceutical companies, including Novartis and Pfizer.
