Researchers surveyed 351 EDs in Massachusetts, Colorado, Georgia and Oregon for CPOE adoption in 2008 — before the government introduced incentives for healthcare IT. They found 30 percent of all EDs had adopted CPOE, but the odds of adoption were .07 for rural EDs and .39 for urban EDs.
