UPenn Medicine's AI tool for data analytics is open-source, free to the public

An automated system that uses machine learning for data analysis is completely open-source and free to use, thanks to the Institute for Biomedical Informatics at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine.

Penn AI is designed to be used by anyone interested in AI, regardless of experience level, from high school students to trained researchers. Users can either import their own datasets for analysis within the tool or use one of the hundreds provided by UPenn.

The aim of Penn AI is two-pronged: While the system will help users learn more about the use of machine learning in data analytics, its own analytical and recommendation capabilities will also improve as more people use it, increasing its potential for advancing research and medicine.

"The problem with machine learning tools is that machine learning people build them, so they're usually only usable by those with high levels of training," said Jason Moore, PhD, director of the Institute for Biomedical Informatics. "Our goal has been to make a free and simple system that is still robust enough to transform the way we approach biomedical research — which I think we've accomplished."
