Omaha-based University of Nebraska Medical Center began construction on its new 192,000-square-foot center, named the Dr. Edwin Davis & Dorothy Balbach Davis Global Center for Advanced Interprofessional Learning.
The $118.9 million facility is funded through a combination of public and private donations, including funds from the city of Omaha, state of Nebraska and HHS. The Davis Global Center will house the medical center's Interprofessional Experiential Center for Enduring Learning program, which offers clinical and surgical training using augmented and virtual reality.
"Learners do best by having experience, whether it's learning how to play a sport, a musical instrument or, in my case, do cardiac surgery," said UNMC Chancellor Jeffrey P. Gold, MD. "The more experience, the more practice, the more hands-on opportunities we get, the better off we are to deliver high quality, safe, effective and patient-centered care."
The Davis Global Center will also house the National Center for Health Security and Biopreparedness, which is funded through HHS. This center will enable UNMC staff to teach federal healthcare personnel about treating highly infectious diseases.
