Lana Garmire, PhD, has been awarded two National Institutes of Health grants to study preeclampsia, breast cancer and acute leukemia with data analytics, according to University of Hawaiʻi System News. Dr. Garmire is an assistant professor in the university's cancer epidemiology program.

Dr. Garmire received $3 million in grant funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Development, which will allow her to study preeclampsia and breast cancer. Using data analytics, she aims to identify biomarkers for preeclampsia and breast cancer risks. With an additional $1.4 million from the National Library of Medicine, she will also apply data analytics to acute leukemia patients, to identify genes that respond to personalized therapies.

"Hawai'i is a fertile ground to do big data research," Dr. Garmire told University of Hawaiʻi System News. "The state has a diversified population for genomics research, and state-of-the-art high performance computing facilities for large-scale computation."
